A Drongan taxi driver has been convicted of sexually assaulting a female passenger after offering to waive her fare in exchange for sex.
James Mitchell, 58, admitted the offence at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.
The court heard how he had pulled into a layby on Skares Road near Cumnock after the woman challenged him for taking a wrong turn.
It was then that Mitchell made the explicit offer and began touching the woman. She managed to escape and raise the alarm.
The incident occurred in the early hours of September 17 last year after the woman and her cousin had been out in Drongan. They had hailed Mitchell’s taxi home to Cumnock.
The court was told that Mitchell had initially denied the charge and planned to lodge a special defence of consent. However, he later admitted his guilt.
Sheriff Desmond Leslie described the offence as a “significant breach of trust” and placed Mitchell on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
He was also given a two-year supervision order, a six-month electronic tag, and a £500 fine.
A non-harassment order was also imposed.
Mitchell’s taxi licence was revoked following the incident, and he lost his job.
