A taxi driver has been sentenced to a community sentence after smashing up the car of a rival during a dispute last July.
Abdigani Ebrahim, 38, of Grangetown, admitted one count of affray and one count of criminal damage when he appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday 8 August, for sentencing.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that a row erupted between a group of taxi drivers in Mill Lane the previous evening.
During the early hours of the following morning Ebrahim became involved in a confrontation with another driver in the Roath area of Cardiff.
The court was told Ebrahim approached the victim’s taxi, armed himself with a bat from his own vehicle, and smashed two of the car’s windows.
Police officers from South Wales Police attended the scene shortly after the incident and saw damage caused to both taxis, including the defendant’s, and Ebrahim told police at interview that he was the victim.
Addressing Ebrahim, Recorder Mark Powell said that both he and the other taxi driver involved were “equally to blame”. The other man is being dealt with separately, the court heard.
He added: "It may be that you did not start it but you should have driven away from it. It’s a serious matter and it’s serious enough for me to impose a community sentence.”
Ebrahim was told he must carry out 150 hours of unpaid work over a period of 18 months.
He must also pay a total of £540 made up of £400 in costs and a victim surcharge of £140.
