Taxi drivers in the town will be able to charge passengers more following a decision by the borough council on 31 July. There had been no tariff increase since September 2022.
The regulatory board panel approved a series of increases, including a rise in the flag fall from 20p to 30p for hackney carriages. Drivers will also be able to charge time and a half from 11.30pm to 6am, instead of midnight to 6am.
The charge for the first 153 metres travelled has gone up from £3.00 to £3.30, followed by 20p for each subsequent 153 metres or 40 seconds waiting.
The decision comes after a taxi owner submitted a petition signed by 21 out of 50 local drivers in February.
While the council acknowledged concerns about affordability for passengers, particularly those who are vulnerable, it was felt that the increases were necessary to maintain the viability of the trade.
However, not all councillors were in favour. Cllr Mervin Bradley expressed concerns that the price hike could harm businesses, while others argued the increases were minimal.
