A joint operation by Oldham Council,Greater Manchester Police's Traffic Unit, and DVSA officials has seen three taxis taken off the road in Oldham due to safety concerns.
During the crackdown, eighteen private hire and hackney vehicles were stopped and inspected at council’s depot on Moorhey Street, with three found to be in such a poor condition that they were taken off the road until the problems were fixed.
Faults included worn tyres, faulty lights, oil leaks, and missing parts.
The council emphasised the importance of road safety for both passengers and other road users.
Deputy Leader Cllr Elaine Taylor said: "No one should be driving a vehicle that isn’t up to standard. Faulty vehicles potentially put the lives of passengers, other road users and pedestrians at risk."
The operation also saw drivers' licences and paperwork checked to ensure compliance with regulations.
Taxi drivers in the town will be able to charge passengers more following a decision by the borough council on 31 July.
