A joint operation by Hull City Council, Wolverhampton Council, and Humberside Police has uncovered a number of safety issues with taxis operating in the city.
Licensing compliance teams have been carrying out random checks on taxis and private hire vehicles in recent months,with the most recent operation taking place on July 24.
During this latest crackdown, 36 vehicles were inspected, resulting in the discovery of several defects. These ranged from minor problems such as broken seating to more serious issues including a tyre with a nail embedded in it and a faulty door lock.
Two drivers were also caught without their badges displayed correctly.
While the majority of vehicles were found to be roadworthy, those with serious defects have had their licences suspended until the problems are rectified.
Drivers with minor issues have been given a week to make the necessary repairs.
Cllr Mark Ieronimo, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for licensing, said: “Passenger safety is our top priority. These checks are essential to ensure that taxis operating in our city meet the highest standards.”
He added: “We want to reassure the public that we are taking steps to identify and remove unsafe vehicles from our roads.”
The joint operation will continue on a regular basis.
