Ride-hailing giant Uber has been given the go-ahead to operate in Darlington after the local council granted it a licence yesterday, Tuesday 13 August.
Darlington Borough Council’s licensing committee approved the application, but with a condition that all Uber drivers must undergo the same training as drivers for other firms.
The decision comes amid concerns from local taxi drivers who fear increased competition from Uber’s lower fares.
One cabbie, Harry Smith, warned of a potential flood of drivers from outside the area, which could drive local businesses out.
Despite not having a licence in Darlington until now, Uber drivers have been able to operate legally in the town using licences from Newcastle, Durham, Stockton, and Middlesbrough.
Licensing officers assured councillors that Uber would be subject to the same regulations as other private hire operators.
However, concerns were raised about enforcement and the company’s lack of a phone booking service.
Uber said it complies with local authority standards and offers a 24-hour helpline for passengers.
The committee ultimately decided to grant the licence, with Councillor Sonia Kane stating: “We’re happy to grant the licence with one condition: all Uber drivers undergo the same training, that way we can assure they’re all on the same page.”
