Passengers across Torbay could face higher taxi fares as drivers grapple with rising costs.
A Torbay Council cabinet committee report proposes increasing charges to keep up with soaring vehicle expenses, including fuel, maintenance, and purchase prices.
Fares in the bay area were last reviewed in 2022.
The move comes as the industry faces a shortage of drivers due to the financial strain.
If approved, Torbay's fares would be among the highest in Devon, with a two-mile journey before 9pm costing £8.10, the same as Plymouth.
Currently, the Devon average is £7.62, with the lowest being Mid Devon Council, where two miles cost £6.80. In Exeter the journey costs £7.50.
Taxi drivers, represented by the Torbay Licensed Taxi Association, are also seeking a hike in cleaning charges from £50 to £75 for soiled vehicles and a £1.50 fee for carrying dogs, excluding assistance animals.
This follows complaints that some drivers will not take dogs, as they are only legally obliged to take assistance animals. The council and the TLTA hope the fixed charge will be an incentive for them to take other dogs. Owners of assistance dogs will not have to pay the charge.
The council aims to balance the needs of drivers with those of passengers, and a public consultation will be held before any changes are implemented.
