Manchester Airport is set to introduce a new barrier-free system for drop-offs and pick-ups from late March 2025. Instead of stopping at barriers, drivers will be logged by ANPR and will have until midnight the following day to pay online or by phone.
Existing charges remain unchanged. Frequent users, such as taxi drivers, can set up auto-pay accounts for convenience.
The airport says this change will reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. "Here at Manchester Airport we’re always looking for ways to make our passengers’ lives easier," said Sue West, the airport’s Landside Operations Director. "By removing barriers in our drop-off and pick-up zones it will speed up the process and make it feel seamless.”
The system will be rolled out in phases across various drop-off and pick-up areas.
However, the announcement has been met with scepticism and criticism on social media. Many believe the change is simply a way to generate more revenue through fines.
"Extra money will be coming in with fines. The system is designed to squeeze more money out of drivers," commented Mehran Khan.
Jimmy Devlin echoed this sentiment: "Do they think drivers are stupid. The only reason they are doing this is to raise extra money due to drivers forgetting to pay by midnight the next day so therefore getting a penalty notice for a £60/£70 fine."
Keith Jackson raised concerns about escalating charges for late payment, comparing it to the Runcorn bridge charges. “And what happens if you forget to pay - the fee doubles and doubles like the Runcorn bridge charges," he questioned. "Is putting the charges up and changing the tariffs from 30 mins to 15 mins not going to make enough money!!??”
Steve Bell suggested the move contradicts the airport's stated goal of reducing traffic. "They allegedly introduced these charges to REDUCE traffic entering the airport. Now they're making it easier for traffic to flow through, all be it for a fee. Getting as many cars through as possible equals more money."
Some commenters called for the fees to be abolished altogether. "It’s scandalous to have to pay for drop off or pick up!" said Lynda Baker.
While most comments were critical, a few users offered support. Zach Cole pointed out the similarity to other parking systems: "The system is no different than using most if not all NCP car parks in Manchester!!"
