NORWICH TAXI FIRM CLAIMS DRIVERS SCARED OF TRAIN STATION PARKING FINES
Local Norwich taxi firm, U-Ride, has alleged that its drivers are being unfairly targeted with hefty parking fines at Norwich Train Station, leaving them "scared" to enter the car park.
U-Ride, based on Magdalen Road, claims as many as 30 of its drivers have been penalised with £100 fines for picking up and dropping off passengers.
Despite assurances from National Car Parks (NCP) and Greater Anglia, who manage the car park, that the issues have been "resolved," U-Ride CEO, Nazia Sheikh, believes the damage is done.
"People are scared about entering the train station because of these fines," she stated.
Sheikh explained that drivers are often completing multiple short trips in and out of the station. “We have proof that our drivers have been on multiple jobs and that they're only in the station for about five or six minutes," she said.
"But because they're doing multiple trips in and out of the train station, they're being charged for it.”
The CEO further questioned the fairness of the system. "If taxi drivers are facing such issues despite having tracking data to challenge the fines, what about regular commuters and visitors who lack the resources to contest these decisions?"
NCP charges between £2.20 for an hour and £13 for a full-day ticket purchased on the day. Private hire vehicles are permitted to enter and exit the station multiple times, provided they stay within the 20-minute grace period.
A Greater Anglia spokesperson acknowledged a previous issue with the system. "We are aware of a previous issue at Norwich where some number plates were not captured leaving the station," they said. "We have resolved this problem."
Both Greater Anglia and NCP confirmed that an appeals process is available for drivers who believe they have been wrongly fined.
