A drug driver was arrested and several vehicles taken off the road in a multi-agency operation targeting unsafe driving in rural Kirklees.
The large-scale initiative, conducted on Manchester Road in Milnsbridge on Friday, 7 February, saw police and partner agencies join forces to improve road safety during the winter months.
The Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) spearheaded the operation, working alongside Kirklees Council’s licensing department, the DVSA, and Kirklees Police licensing and Catch and Control officers.
The day of action resulted in the arrest of one man for drug driving. Further enforcement saw four drivers issued with Traffic Offence Reports for a range of violations, including driving without insurance and other vehicle-related offences.
The operation also focused on the licensing and roadworthiness of taxis. Out of fifteen taxis stopped, ten were found to have issues, ranging from incorrect signage to serious vehicle defects.
As a result, five taxi drivers had their licences to carry passengers immediately suspended.
PC Grifford of the Kirklees Rural NPT highlighted the importance of road safety during winter.
“The winter weather can obviously introduce extra hazards into our day to day driving and it’s really important we all drive safely and vehicles are kept road worthy,” he stated.
He added, “This operation saw police and partners take action against a number of drivers whose vehicles were not properly road worthy including several taxi drivers, as well as arrest a male for drug driving.”
PC Grifford confirmed that this operation is not an isolated incident.
“More operations of this kind will be carried out and we urge anyone who has concerns about such offending in their community to contact us, as we do use information from residents to help us plan our activity.”
