BURNLEY PRIVATE HIRE FIRM FIRES DRIVER AFTER ASSISTANCE DOG REFUSAL
A Burnley private hire company, Apollo Taxis, has terminated its relationship with a driver after he refused to transport a disabled passenger and her assistance dog.
Victoria Morris, 33, booked a ride from Burnley Manchester Road train station to her home on February 12th.
She anticipated potential issues so filmed the encounter, which shows the driver claiming she should have specified the assistance dog when booking and that special cars were designated for animals.
Ms Morris countered that her dog, Molly, being an assistance dog, was legally permitted in any taxi.
Despite her explanation, the driver drove off, leaving her "in a lot of pain and standing in the freezing cold."
A spokesperson for Apollo Taxis acknowledged the driver's actions were "unacceptable" and a breach of both company policy and the Equality Act 2010, which prohibits discrimination against assistance dog users.
While the company stated another car was dispatched within six minutes, they emphasised their "zero-tolerance approach to discrimination" and confirmed the driver, registered with Pendle Borough Council but not directly employed by Apollo, will no longer work for them.
The company added they are "reinforcing training to ensure all drivers uphold our commitment to accessible, inclusive transport for all."
