Taxi drivers in the borough are calling for a significant fare increase to help them cope with the rising cost of living and competition from Uber.
The Hinckley Area Taxi Association has proposed new tariffs to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, which could make the borough's taxis the most expensive in Leicestershire.
The association argues that increased costs for fuel, vehicle maintenance, insurance, and new vehicles, coupled with the presence of Uber, have made it difficult for taxi drivers to maintain profitability.
The proposed fare increase would see the cost of a two-mile journey rise from £6.40 to either £7.40 or £7.90.
Tina Duane, chair of the association, said the increase is necessary to attract younger people into the profession and to ensure the long-term viability of the industry.
She also emphasised that the association tries to keep fares as low as possible for regular customers, such as the elderly and disabled.
However, Uber has denied allegations that its drivers are picking up passengers from the street without a booking, stating that all rides must be pre-booked through the app.
The company maintains that it operates according to industry standards and regulations.
The proposed fare increases will now be advertised to the public, and any objections will be considered by the council before a final decision is made.
